A crumbling driveway and parking area, along with significant water and drainage issues, were the impetus for this project at an old farm house in Amherst. On the hill behind the house are several natural springs that (even in relatively dry times) cause a number of issues including basement flooding. The parking area near the house is paved using permeable “Turfstone” – a material chosen not only for its reduction of storm water runoff, but also because the grass that grows through the holes in the pavers softens the look of the surface and lessens it as a focal point . Surrounding the driveway and behind the house is a system of drain pipes and swales that directs excess water away from the house and driveway surface. A reclaimed granite walkway provides a visually engaging and functional entry to the house.
